"building beyond" sounds great, but i don't know how you do that while continuing to keep the powerful powerful. like yeah trump is the worst sure-- but so long as the monied interests fund the problematic in power, there will always be a limit to how much resistance can be forged before it gets stomped out. if every election is the most important one ever, i don't see how we can actually fix things by voting in status-quo candidates.

I want to entertain a hypothetical: say there are two candidates on the ballot with a reasonable chance of winning: a Democrat and a Republican. The Democratic incumbent has been okay-ish on the issue of Palestine: they haven't gone as far as to call it a genocide and aren't gunning for Israel in the ICC, but they aren't actively arming the genocidal regime carrying it out either. However, in the domestic sphere, they've paid lip service condemning hate crimes against trans people while still actively demonizing puberty blockers and HRT, cutting funds from gender-affirming care services, and otherwise actively supporting the persecution of transgender people all over the country, regardless of state. They're about as bad as they can get on this issue. The Republican challenger is obviously also vehemently opposed to trans people and their basic human rights. Their rhetoric is noticeably worse because of course it is, but aside from maybe increasing funding for anti-trans law enforcement and cutting resources for gender-affirming care, it really can't get much worse because the Democratic incumbent has already made the country a genocidal hellhole for trans people. And on top of that, this Republican wants to send all kinds of weapons and support to Israel so they can carry out their genocide with even more ruthless efficiency. Hell, maybe they even want to send the US military there to help. Now, in this situation, what would the reasonable reaction as a trans person be if the Palestinian community here has been actively advocating for voting for Democrats ostensibly in order to prevent the Republicans from raining hell on their families back home, propping up and urging you to vote for an incumbent who has spent the last two years actively making life a living hell on earth for the trans community? Does this feel like a pill you can swallow in the name of solidarity and "voting for a better enemy"? Or does this feel like a stab in the back? Obviously, this is an attempt by me to paint this situation in reverse: feel free to replace trans rights with abortion, gay marriage, or whatever you want that the Democrats have at least rhetorically been better on. Individual people can obviously have different answers to this question. Maybe some people will be fine with their supposed allies, or they themselves even, voting for the person actively supporting your or your family's destruction because the other one will probably do the same and also make life worse for others. I'd wager a similarly significant number will balk at the idea, considering it a betrayal of proletarian solidarity. I care less about everyone's conclusion on this than about if this situation is actually considered by every single person backing Kamala right now. My position has been and still is this: vote for the Democrat if you feel like you have to, I don't care. But it makes no sense to me why any leftist would spend their breath FOURTEEN WEEKS OUT from an election bolstering one. I don't harbor any delusions that it's enough time to sufficiently push them on any major issues, but that doesn't change the fact you're essentially just giving them your support for free before they've made any concessions on anything. I really don't see what the point of that is. If Kamala loses, it won't be the fault of any leftists she has spent the last four(+) years giving the finger to. Lower Decks is the absolute heart of Star Trek. What Mike McMahan has done with this show is....I don't have the words. It's a Trek Comedy that is as much a Trek show as any other. Tawny Newsome as Beckett Mariner is my absolute favorite Star Trek character of all time. Of all the characters. There's a lot. Cheers to Jack Quaid and the rest of the cast. Everyone is fantastic. Right down to Kether Donohue as Peanut Hamper. Just love everyone and all of it. But seriously. Tawny Newsome is just the Caitian's meow. Talk about an actor with the background and passion to play such a well written role. Where do I send my money? We have to find a new home for Star Trek. There should just be a streaming platform with only Star Trek content. 5 to 7 bucks a months but the only budget concerns are Star Trek shows. We would all subscribe. I'd pledge a lifetime subscription to any streaming platform that picks up Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds (which is obviously next for paramount). We got family guy back on the air. Don't get me wrong. I love ST: Prodigy for many of the reasons you discuss; and will die on this hill. But, isn't there a huge plot hole unresolved at the end? Okay, hear me out. They get the Protostar back to Tars Lamora when it's needed to preserve the timeline. But, don't the young Diviner and Ascencia undergo radical changes to their previous timelines due to Gwynn and friends showing up? What possible motivation would they have to end up as they are in season one? Maybe there's an answer to this I'm unaware of. Help?

God, I want hope. It was either the voters or the donors that made this happen, and I want it to be the voters, because the donors don't care about anything worth having. But I'm trying to stay positive while watching the "I will bludgeon the unreasonable left into voting like I want" crowd have the worst possible reaction to this dysfunctional representative democracy actually coughing up a small amount of representation. So many voices want this to be anything other than moderates saying they weren't okay with something and the establishment responding out of fear they'd lose votes. Perhaps it was a grand conspiracy to get Republicans to waste time and energy fighting Biden, and they were going to go with Harris the whole time. Maybe pressure from leftists did it! (Yes. Our comrades Schiff, Pelosi and Obama.) But whatever it was, NEVER say you won't unconditionally vote for something EVER again, that does NOT help. Sit there quietly and loyally and let the big people sort it all out for you, all you gotta do is vote. A deviation from business as usual that has a positive result is a reason to... go back to business as usual as quickly as possible, forever. And the screaming and bullying continues unabated, like that's actually gonna dent an anarchist. Harris has my vote and I don't want her to lose it, but she can. If she's in danger of crossing a line (God PLEASE let her deal with Bibi without endorsing the genocide) I will say so, because that's the only way to get someone to stop. CBC News talked to a guy protesting at the Capitol with his two young children, in danger of being arrested and/or pepper-sprayed today. He said, "My kids, my family, me are not more important than the people of Gaza." I know I'm not either, and I can't fake like it isn't so. If Harris can navigate the next four months without murdering my hope that the atrocities may finally cease, I"ll be a straight ticket voter again. It's a low bar to clear. Please let her clear it.

Sol literally wanted to "save" the children from their loving parents. there is a strong theme of the Jedi as colonialist power if you choose to see it like that. The way I’ve been describing this has always been “Under (Democrat candidate), the left gets to keep gasping for air. Under Trump, we die.” That’s always been the depressing truth.

In a just, fair, and healthy democracy, ideally, assassinations and similar forms of terrorism and violence would be frowned upon across the board, and inciting and cheering violence against one's political rivals and leaders would be considered barbaric and anti-democratic. Problematically, we're currently living in a society where one party consistently tries to play the game by the rules, and the other party is taking full advantage of the first's goodwill by just running amok and completely trashing the field. As a result, even though Biden and the other Dems have set an example of how politicians *should* ideally behave in these situations, in the current sociopolitical climate, their civility and charitability just comes across as dangerously naive and infuriatingly out-of-touch, like a playground monitor who only lightly tsk-tsks as the giant bully beats their victim bloody.

If you want a queer, socialist, feminist utopia to exist tomorrow, the current neo-liberal world order to stand now.

Is good that Biden wasn't rewarded after Gaza. Even if it was mainly for other reasons, there's at least some Justice. Hope Kamala breaks completely with Biden on this issue.

Jessie, I like you a lot and I support your enthusiasm and overall sentiment, but, as someone from a completely different country, let me share a thought: I think, it's unproductive to view the government as an enemy at all times. Most likely, during all our lifetimes we will have to operate within a state system in one way or another, and isn't it better to try and make it better and build up upon things that work (while dismantling and rebuilding the ones that do not?) I'm speaking as someone born in USSR, which collapsed half a year after that. And while the transition was necessary, the way it happened (with no thought put into preserving the good parts) has hurt so many people, has ruined so many lives and thrown out so much effort that was put into building the good parts, you cannot help but grieve and wish that things happened differently. Ultimately, I believe what we need is an evolution (of society, governance, etc), not revolution if it can be avoided.
